Note that some watches have spoken audio promts, e.g., a choice of values to announce on auto-lap, though I am not aware of any with a spoken count-down. This might be convenient if you are already wearing earphones. support.garmin.com

It’s just not loud enough on my wrist, when not wearing earphones.

Maybe it’s an age thing: my arms are not long enough for reading, yet too long for hearing! 😆

What I wasn't clear about - the announcement comes over the earphones and mutes whatever was playing at the time.

Actually that’s not exactly true. If you are getting audio alerts over headphones when listening to an audiobook then the book stops when you get an alert. If you are listening to music then the music 'ducks' (reduces volume) when you get an alert but the music keeps playing. Still, the alerts are much easier to hear!

Ah Steve we might be talking about different things. Are you talking about music/ audiobooks from the phone? I was talking off the watch itself via mp3s synced to it or via Spotify.

When mentioned earlier that the training plan changes when you add a race to the calendar, is this when you are using one of the pre-defined Garmin plans?
