I had a look at what my max HR was set to on Garmin Connect. It's set to 171. Without doing a proper test I'm really not sure what to set it to. 220-age is wildly out. That would be 167. A report on the Garmin web interface shows my average max during exercise in the last year is 178. I regularly hit 180+, with the max 186. I can't say I've done much all-out effort in the last year, I only did 1 parkrun and 1 race last week. So I'm going to guess at 195 and see how that goes. Wrist HR isn't supremely accurate, I suppose, so I don't think the actual numbers matter as much as using the same thing to measure it consistently. Looking at the way it calculates the zones from that, easy is 117 - 137. I would struggle to actually run at that heart rate. I was in that zone for today's 3 mile walk. For my 3 mile run my HR was 147 - 165. I know I'm not supremely fit, but the numbers are a bit offputting.

Fenix 7X has arrived. Def big compared to my Forerunner 935 but a very different beast indeed. the GPS is much more accurate and the extra features are going to take a while to sink in

How are people measuring the F7 being "much more accurate" on the GPS?

From what I’ve seen if you zoom in on a trace you get much less wiggle so you can see which side of the road you are on for example. I’ve also seen better traces in bad GPS areas like high buildings.

quimby When it comes to heart rate on your watch, take it with a pinch of salt. They're meant to be in the ballpark, but not very accurate. If you want better accuracy, get a chest strap, the difference when i got one was night and day (I just can't be bothered wearing it though).

KPM, the Fenix 7 features the 4th generation optical sensor from Garmin. I’ve got a 945 which I believe is the 3rd generation and, worn tight enough, it’s very accurate. I suspect the F7 optical to be even better.

KPM watch based HRM can be spot on. I've worn my trusted Polar OH1+ alongside my 645 and 99+% of the time they are beat for beat inline. Suspect it largely depends on your wrist and how well it fits with the watch so probably highly personal. But I trust my watch HRM as much as any other HRM.

That's fair enough, I was just going off my personal experience and then doing a bit of research about it when I thought mine was off. I usually have my watch (Fenix 6) a bit looser (only a bit) as my wrists seem to expand during running, but I also no longer really care about the heart rate values. It was more when I was trying to do heart rate running, but that was such a ballache to stay within the range with my watch that it stressed me out which raised my heart rate.. vicious cycle!

Regarding the optical sensor, i always wondered how it distinguished between a slight change in the skin colour (i THINK it measures it this way, but it's been ages since i looked it up) and say the hairs that are on your arms and may be moving in and out of the range affecting the values.

chunkywizard yeah I think my Fenix 6 is definitely accurate enough for my needs, but when i bobbed on an HRM, the difference in the graphs was quite stark. Though the average may have been similar, the actual points of data were much smoother and it seemed to react to changes in pace and elevation faster, so i had a more accurate live reading, which meant I didn't have to keep going slow at the start of downhill sections, for example

My needs now* (just plodding about and using averages after runs, rather than monitoring and acting on it during)
