Sidenote: which 90s icon does Aegon remind you of? I'm getting a dollop of Draco Malfoy, obviously, but also a whiff of grungetronica (Cobain? Corgan with hair? A blonde Brian Molko?).

David Bowie wore an eyepatch at some stage didn't he? Or maybe the bloke from Dead or Alive?
Enjoyed that a lot, also subverted the something terrible happening in episode 9 trope...

Now the first season is all done I'm curious to know how well it landed with people, and whether that depends on whether you've read the books or not.
For me I thought the time jumps were a problem but I can't imagine how else it could have been done to give us the important character development, because without that a lot of the action in the later seasons would just be Michael Bay rather than GRRM. You've got to care.
How about the rest of you? What did you think?

I loved it. I haven’t read the books. I didn’t mind the time jumps but I’d read enough and listened to podcasts so knew to expect them.
I thought it’s a great companion piece to GOT. Enough connection that it feels like the same world, but with a different enough story and certainty a different method of storytelling, much less jumping about and we really feel like we’ve got to know the characters. I know there will be more introduced next season but I like it that way, as GOT was pretty sprawling

I also think it was worth spending the time setting up the back stories rather than jumping straight to the Dance.

I guess the podcasts/ other media is another aspect, Meglet. Without them doing some of the legwork I wouldn't have had a clue about some (minor) elements or characters, eg the title sequence was wasted on me until Screencrush did an explanation.
Without that to "support" the storytelling in the show would it have been the same experience?
(I listen to Cast of Kings, Boiled Leather Audio Hour (BLAH) and the Ringerverse so I'd got a lot of help inpicking up some of the smaller details, and to me that's all part of the experience of watching a series like this but if you're not that invested would it make sense? WOuld you know who was who and why they loved/ hated each other? I don't know.)

I haven't read the books and apart from the Guardian recap for each episode I've not invested in other materiel around the show.
I mostly enjoyed it and I think I followed most of the stories OK. My minor quibbles are not quite remembering who everyone is and the uneven acting. I understand the need for time jumps and I thought it improved with the later actors, especially Emma D'Arcy. Favourite character is probably Daemon but I do love a good, slightly camp villain and Matt Smith played it perfectly. Best episode was 8 thanks to the amazing performance from Paddy Considine.
I'm glad a 2nd series has been confirmed and I'm looking forward to where it goes to next.
Oh, and it absolutely trounces ROP which was a disappointment in the end.

That's good, LN. I've been a bit worried that it wouldn't "land" for people who "just watch it" without all the extra-curricular stuff. I want it to stand on it's own too feet but I find it hard to tell whether it really does given how much other stuff I consume around the show.
Also really glad the second series is definitely happening (I wasn't really in any doubt but nice that it's official). Only problem being that it won't be out until 2024!
