I haven’t read the books and I’m a big fan of GOT, so I was a bit disappointed at first and couldn’t relate to the characters in HoD. However, the later episodes got better and the last two episodes were great and left me looking forward to season 2.

I have a feeling that when we've seen the whole thing (all 3 seasons, or are they doing more than that?), this first season will work much better than it feels like it has now as a stand alone season.

I think they’ve said the Dance will cover 4 seasons? I can’t see how surely the dragons just flame each other? But I know nothing and want to keep it that way (avoiding book spoilers on twitter is a bit tricky)
Matt Smith has been incredible this season. Paddy too. And I loved both the young and older Rhaenyra. Also really liked how much was done without words, some looks here, and sometimes just music and scenes (the start of E9 when the king is dead was quite chilling)
I listened to Dragoncast and the official HBO one.
I really didn’t like Rings of Power. Felt very twee after HoD.

I liked Rings of Power but it is very different to GoT/ HotD. I can see why "Twee" feels like an appropriate description but i'd prefer gentle. I'm not sure it works as well as HotD mainly because it's almost entirely a new story that isn't from even an outline left by JRRT.
A lot of the pleasure in RoP comes from how beautiful it is to look at, and I've always thought that if you're admiring the settings the story or characters can't be working. I'm not sue that the case with this one, though. It's just that the settings are ofton SO stunning.
Having said that I do think the characters need to feel a bit more rounded in the next season.

I know they’re both heavily CGId, but RoP felt much more artificial than HoD. Possibly because HOD takes real locations and adds CGI, where RoP looked almost completely artificial.

Yes, it was much more studio-based and greenscreened (or whatever the modern version of that is).

I’m a fan of GoT but sorry to be honest, I got bored with HoD. I just lost interest. I gave up after the episode when the king died and even during that episode I was wondering what else to watch instead. I haven’t read any of the books. Much preferred Rings of Power.

You got through 8 of the 10 episodes and stopped there Monty? I don't want to tell anyone what to enjoy but I think you got out at just the wrong moment. Most of season 1 was basically setting the table for the civil war to succeed Viserys. You've done the "hard yards" if you made it to ep8. It should be a lot more action packed and more evenly paced from here.
I'm curious whether you could say what worked for you in RoP in comparison, though.

I think it’s because RoP is more of a story that I could follow where HoD was too political. GoT was more story based to me I think too which I liked. That’s my opinion anyway. I know that you’ve got to give these programs time to settle into the plot etc so that’s why I made it to e8.

I liked the last episode. It felt like it made sense and set up the next season nicely.
