I found that on Scottish 6 Day - Dunes were a nightmare! Great fun!

That's very intriguing Oranj especially in terms of the first control. I was just expecting to crest the first little hill and find the flag somewhere in one of the boulders but it turned out to be the other side from what would have been out of sight. After that there was some confidence that most (though not all) of the middle section I found fairly efficiently. The 10th control (of 12) was my hardest and I was on the verge of giving it up for a bad job. It was well and truly hidden in the non-descript dunes and I had tried to head back to a point I could vouch for and managed to miss it 3 times. Had I had that control early, I reckon I'd have lost all confidence. |

paulcook hope you enjoyed the event! if id had seen these forum posts id have said hello to you. South Gare is a tricky area with such a large dune area, with complex features, a confusing in places path network and in some areas few relocation features. Just have to remember if your struggling at times so are the other orienteers. Well done on completing the course! hopefully see you at the durham events |

I don't think I stuck to the paths all that much. When it worked it worked, but then when it didn't I had no frame of reference to where I was because as you say, it's a confusing environment with often little to distinguish where you are on the map. Certainly a lesson learned there.

Well done paulcook for completing it and winning the course! I hope you enjoyed it and do more orienteering in the future. It was good that you were advised to drop down to light green. Doing a too-difficult course and potentially not completing it would be offputting. |

Sounds like a good, if tough, first proper event! Well done The idea of attack points and catching features are really useful in that sort of scenario. Website below explains what I mean: https://act.orienteering.asn.au/resources/skills/advanced-skills/lesson-8-attack-points/. |

Nun’s Cross - Devon. I walked round a short green. Very wild! Wet and windy experience - we had some novices who loved it. |

Shortcut Cam
Looks wild. Abingdon urban for me. Thought I’d see Oranj but not to be.

Oranj
Yep, pretty bleak! My knee's still a bit crocked Shortcut Cam although I managed a decent run on the Saturday so perhaps I could've managed to trundle round. I'm never quite sure what I'm going to wake up to, although it's slowly improving. Looking at Routegadget, they didn't use any of the northern and eastern areas which were part of the lockdown maprun we had there. My knowledge from that run wouldn't have been much use |
