I'm impressed how, for example, control 3, he comes off the main path at the exact right time. I've a lot to learn!

He’s either paced himself from the previous path junction, followed elephant tracks in or seen the bush ahead of time. If doing it properly you’d read the contours on the hill and go in at appropriate point.

I was intrigued by his grumblings of controls 7 and 8.
It's so easy to read the map when you've got the electronic gadgets on the screen, and I'm completely inexperienced, but I would never expect controls easy to spot (though varying on colour course)

So reassuring to see someone else having the sort of problems I usually have!

My second race yesterday and I won my course again - though I was the youngest in it by 20 years.
It was more about trying to get the nav right and apart from perhaps the most obvious control, I hit the rest about first time. And particularly rewarding learnt something about distance from another competitor - it's whether I'll remember or be able to use it again next time!!

Probably something entirely obvious to any (half-)seasoned orienteer. Basically a couple of quick distance calculations.
She was merely talking to herself originally but she was spot on with the distance calculation to the next control point. I've only done two races (plus a couple of virtual practices) but now realise I've been looking for controls far too early. And secondly, one of the aims of me trying some orienteering events was to improve my general mapwork anyway.

I struggle with distance estimation. I’ve been told about counting steps but my stride length varies considerably depending on terrain and whether I’m walking so I’ve not managed to make it work.

I guess it’s part of a tool kit. Having a sense of time, pacing, distance means when a feature doesn’t appear where expected you can react rather than bundling on and making a massive error. Like having a temporal catching feature.
