Sand dunes in general are not too bad for navigation - I coped OK with them at the Caddihoe (Cornwall) event in 2017 as they were nice and open, you could run bearings, sight distant markers, etc.

What you get in Moray are sand dunes buried in open forest (the white areas). It is stupidly difficult to keep track of where you are - my only visit there was for a 2-day event in 2016. I managed OK on the first day and then got over-confident on the second!

It was difficult to keep track. Slightest compass baring error and you’re screwed. Couldn’t make the ground fit the map and vice versa. Extremely difficult trying to relocate.

Fragile Do Not Bend
I feel knackered just thinking of tying to run around sand dunes.

I can remember doing orienteering on sand dunes in the past - it was tough! I'm sure where I was the contour interval was also 2.5m.....

9-10 confused me. Didn’t realise 10 had a cut until afterwards. I stayed high when I actually had to drop. Oddly enough, 1:10000 map was easier to interpret.
