The vivaro has the disadvantage of having a separate cab. Being able to swivel the cab seats makes for more comfortable sitting. We like the sliding door so you can sit indoors and still get the view and the fresh air. Storage is a consideration - as well as clothes, food, and kitchen kit, there's boots, trainers, bike helmets, and (for us) all the dog's paraphernalia. Oh, paddleboards too.

We don’t use our VW camper as often as I thought we might, but it’s suited us well for a couple of week long trips to Scotland, using a mixture of sites and wild camping. We have a porta potty for wild camping and make use of site facilities like showers and public loos wherever we can. I think it depends on how easy going/tolerant you are of each other in confined spaces! And where you plan to stop. The longest we would spend in the van would be when driving or sleeping. We do see people pitched on sites who are obviously not planning on going far for a while! Having a shower and loo would be good for longer trips and Mr S has a long list of YouTube channels that show various options. Something like a long wheel base Crafter conversion would probably be our retirement buy. |

There’s an old saying that it takes owning three vans before you find your perfect one, and also that there is no perfect van, just the best compromise.

I think ultimately for the European travel plans we need something more motor home style but for now a little one for the odd overnighter/weekend would be ideal it’s really a choice of start now (& make the first of the three) and progress as we know more what we want or just wait until we start going further afield.

I think we're the exception that proves the rule then - Savanna isn't perfect, but having worked out what we actually needed, rather than what I wanted, we chose right first time. |

Pretty much the same here. We did hire one before taking the plunge though. I’d like a MAN conversion for the smaller width, but then the interior would be a different compromise again. I really like our Moho interior.

We started with tents, moved to a folding camper (a more off ground sort of trailer tent), then caravans and finally motorhomes. We’re now happily settled on our best suited layout but there are always compromises to be made, especially when it comes to storage. Our last MH had plenty of storage but the bed layout became less than ideal as, at our age the need to use the loo a few times a night which meant disturbing each other. Now we have less storage on board but have a 500Ltr storage box mounted on the back of the van in which we carry lightweight but bulky items such as folding chairs. |

I think what I’ve learned is that for most, there is a compromise to made somewhere. For example, space/practicality/comfort when actually using it to sleep/relax vs ease of driving around country lanes, parking etc.

yes, if there was a TARDIS version where you could have the comfort of a 7m A-class in a 5.4 M van ... |

There are lots of options between a 7 metre motorhome and a VW T5 or T6. Some of the larger van conversions have very cleverly included loos and showers and enough room to live as well as sleep in. The Caravan and Motorhome Show is definitely a good place to start, gg. |
