Shhhhh… I’ve just sort of persuaded Nic that the motorhome is the best vehicle for us to use to get to see the country while doing some cycling events.

We are just in the process of planning a 3 week (give or take) jaunt over in Europe. No firm plans as yet, but we’ve literally got the maps out and thinking where we’d like to go. I’d like to head over towards Italy, but we shall see. We’re going Plymouth-Roscoff as although the crossing is longer we are only an hour from Plymouth. We’ve got friends who use Brittany Ferries very regularly (they’ve got some kind of membership I think) and they’ve given us a code to get a discount, so every little helps.
We usually go Dover-Dunkirk but it’s such a pain in the neck driving up the A303 from Devon, what with the time it takes (often 7hrs+), congestion, needing a stop over the night before we take the ferry, diesel costs, this time I think we’re going to go Plymouth-Roscoff. They ferry itself is actually more expensive but we don’t lose 2 days of travel in the U.K., so I think it could work for us. Often we head to the Netherlands (girlfriend is Dutch) so Dover works, but we’re planning something different this time.
Just need to go through the faff of getting the pet passport sorted for the hound. Girlfriend is a vet, but it’s still a pain in the neck as she can’t sign the paperwork, and a vet with the correct ‘panel’ has to do it, which fortunately she knows someone who has that. The 3 or 4 times times we’ve been with the dog, girlfriend has filled all the paperwork out, and asked a vet friend to sign it, which has worked ok. In fact Dover-Dunkirk it wasn’t even checked at all, although Cairnryan-Larne it was.
Anyway, I’m excited - I like the planning side of things. Literally having a map and figuring out a rough route and having the flexibility to go/do what we want is one of the things I really like about travelling in the van.

I usually have a say in the destination, once that’s decided my wife is the planner, I’m the driver.

Sounds good! I agree about the travel across southern England to the Kent ports - and even worse than going there is coming back again when you're weary at the end of a great holiday. I'd happily drive two or three miles in France for every mile not driven on UK roads.

Thats the only benefit we have - 5 mins to Dover docks, 15 mins to tunnel (which is our preferred route).
I love the planning and a good old fashioned map - getting quite a collection now.
We went to Italy last year (along with Germany, Austria and France) and Sarahwoo is there currently - you should check her blogs 😁

We've chosen to travel Newhaven to Dieppe. A bit of a drive for us, but a good price, made better by the over 60s discount of 20%
