Customer warning. There are downsides to owning a diesel vehicle that has to comply with Euro 6 emissions standards. They have complex exhaust systems which can be costly if they go wrong. (This is where readers who said “I could buy a lot of nights in a hotel for that!” will smile quietly.) That’s £500 spent yesterday on flushing out the whole exhaust system to clear build ups of soot and put an additive into the diesel and clear the dreaded amber warning light - and next week we’re back in to address the dodgy AdBlue range warning light, which could be software, a sensor or the whole system with its filters, pumps and injectors …

Although to be fair that did also include an oil change and a pretty big out-of-warranty software update.

A question for you lot, where do you put your luggage when you have a campervan? I've just been looking at photos of some VW vans and there doesn't appear much space, especially if you have more than two people on board.

Not that I can afford one, anyway.

I think I’m going to make a wooden bed base to go over my folded back seats & boot, stick a mattress on top and then figure out a way to block the light from windows. Should be good for a few nights car camping then

We are getting better at travelling light and tend to pile stuff into the drivers seat and footwell. I have also made a large shelf with plywood which we put over the front seats once the poptop is up and that gives us loads of space for our clothes which we pack in plastic storage tubs.
It's one slight hassle of having this size of van as everything has to be moved around again if you want to drive for a day out!

We have cabinets over the fixed bed for clothes and we use Ikea storage boxes for shoes, bike stuff, rucksacks, etc, that stack neatly under the bed. Fold up chairs slot in between the boxes.

In our old T4 vw van we had space behind the seat. Everything was well organised, we all had a bag. We did find we had less space when our van went in for some insurance work and they gave us a new pop top for a few weeks!

Hi, we are going to be in France soon with the van and just getting the bits and pieces together that we need.

Could anyone explain (ideally in words of one syllable as this stuff isn’t my forte) what I need to do about the reverse polarity at (some?) sites in France? Can I buy something to use with my existing eHU cable to sort this?
