My stepdads just been telling me they saw a pine marten in Lorton valley near cockermouth back in summer. My sister works in a pub in the valley and he has to pick her up after and they see loads of wildlife on the roads at night. But a pine marten 😯😯 aside from wolves, they are top of my list to see in wild but thought they were extinct in Cumbria. |

heard rumours of pine marten in that area when we were there in July - we were staying between Low Lorton and Eaglesfield and the cottage owners said they believed there were marten locally, but they'd never seen them.

(we're hoping to stay in the same cottage again next summer, it was quite close to some old and pretty much undisturbed woodland, if we do go I shall take a lot of peanuts and the trail camera )

Crocus were up and blooming in a local park three days ago--a couple of weeks earlier than usual. Small group of eight Siskins this morning in another local park while out running to kick start the New year. And a Nuthatch. Happy Birding and Running Year everyone. |

It seems to be some sort of celebration day for wrens- never seen nor heard so many in such a short space of time, there was one in its usual spot at the bottom of the garden fence, one under the winter Jasmine and another under the pyracantha- and that was before I got to the river banks and must have seen 3 or 4 more.

Pretty sure I spotted a short-eared owl while out on a run today. Raptor flying over meadow, which confused me because it definitely had the owl head shape but was much darker and sleeker than a barn owl. Ages since I've seen one, and didn't have my bins with me, but it does seem likely. Also the last few days have been great for the winter thrush sightings. Flocks of fieldfares and redwings on the run today, and in the last 3-4 days, little posses of redwings have been coming throughout the day and perching briefly at the top of a large walnut tree which overhangs our garden and which my office window looks out on to. |
