We are in a new build house with a wildlife corridor in front of our windows. I was really pleased to see a pair of Treecreepers going up and down the branches yesterday morning.

90% sure I spotted a goldeneye on the river. near my house. It was at a distance and it was busy diving for a really good look but the white patch on its head was distinctive. I'm going to go down the other side of the river to get a bit closer for my lunchtime walk today. I'll make sure I take the bins as well.

A while since I saw one but from memory they sit very low in the water. Tufties look very ‘buoyant’ but goldeneye look like submarines with a low profile especially at the back end

A female sparrowhawk just flashed through the garden at low level, in that rather menacing way they do. There wasn't a single little bird in sight, which is very unusual at the moment as the feeders are normally heaving. There must be some very good early warning system in place!

With Goldeneyes and Tufties it's another one of those where if you only think it's a Goldeneye it's probably a Tufty because when you get a good look at one it's obviously not a Tufty (c.f. Eagle v Buzzard). Head is very "wedge" shaped compared to a Tufty and face patch is often very obvious. There is also a lot more white visible above the water but Tufties can confuse the issue by twisting themselves when preening so that they are almost upside down on the the surface of the water.

Not the best picture but I do think it's a goldeneye. What do you think?

Definitely a Goldeneye. White face patch and the white all along it's side, rather than a 'rectangular' patch like the Tufties.
