I've just had a thought.....what if we invited all the countries in the world to join the EU? We could rename it the World Union (WU). Perhaps I'll message JC and see if he could forward my question @ PMQs as there is no facility to do this with DC. |

don't we (almost) have that already with the UN and WTO? Perhaps the little englanders want to secede from those organisations as well...... |

Yes, but Macca the beauty of the WU would be that anyone could go and live anywhere in the world with no questions asked - can't you see the benefit of that?

I thought that the idea of globalization was to allow everyone to work on an even footing, EU/non EU, but unfortunately instead of dragging up the wages of non EU workers ,it just seems to be an unholy rush to lower EU wages. As a web developer I cannot compete with the prices charged by Indian and Russian freelancers, and nor could anyone else in the UK.

Chrisull - we could compete if we leave the EU and rip up the Employment Rights afforded to us as a member. Then we can become the sweatshop of Europe working 60 hours a week for fook all in wages on zero hours contracts and conditions that would make Sports Direct look like a dream to work for. Quite frankly I'm surprised the Tory Govt want us to stay in Europe for this reason alone. |

And nor can anyone in Switzerland. That's not the EU's fault. That's the difference between living in one of the world's most developed countries, and a BRIC. And the BRIC countries wouldn't be able to compete with web developers in Botswana, if only Botswana had fast broadband. However, if competing on an even keel with the BRIC nations requires the Human Rights violations of Russia and China, or the massive social inequality enjoyed in Brazil and India, I'd rather live in my own little gated community in the EU. Because without the massive tariff wall of the EU surrounding us, we'd be in an even bigger shit-sack competing against service providers in the BRIC, and I'm pretty certain that our lovely bosses wouldn't improve our lot by making the BRIC countries pay more. |

60 hours nah that's far to little for the Tories, with 168 hypothetical hours a week, we should all be working over 50% of that, like the days when we went down the mines, came back up, had to spend tokens in our master's shop so they could overprice everything by 300%, and then if we didn't tug our fetlocks or bow low enough we were horsewhipped for our troubles.

Whilst this article was written in October, I find it interesting in how it attributes the factors which characterise In and Out supporters (with apologies to any 55+ graduates supporting Out....) whatukthinks.org I was actually looking for any statistics on political party affiliation driving voting intention. In Acotland it's being reported that up to 30% of SNP voters are inclined to Out, and it's clear that both Labour and Conservative are split at a party level. Far too simplistic to associate any one party with a single view (UKIP excluded). |
