Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Buzzes? Ours is outside, so I wouldn't even noticed if it buzzed. But it doesn't! Sounds like they might have a problem or fault with their battery?

Like all things, over 10 years or more, devices may deteriorate. Before buying I did as much investigation as I could and deterioration seems to be less than 20%, even 10% in some studies. Our battery has a guarantee (think it is no worse than 20% over 10 years, but can't remember exactly).

If it saves us £100 a month just now and will only be saving me £80 a month in 10 years (ignoring inflation and changing energy prices) I'll be perfectly happy. :-) G

It's no more money down the drain than any other house improvement, assuming your buyers are not complete idiots (well who knows about that though). As for RunningRonnie, any decent combi really ought to be off until used, that's the whole point. We don't have a hot tank at all - getting rid of that was part of the point of changing over, as it was in our bedroom and uncomfortably warm overnight. Can't guarantee that your system isn't odd though!

Thanks - that actually makes sense. We don't have a tank in the house, but I did wonder if there was a small tank inside the machine. Kinda like a buffer of water to ensure there was a steady flow or something. It's a very new boiler.

Batteries should not buzz. If it's buzzing, there's an electrical fault and it needs looking at.

That's not a reason to not get a battery - just that that one in particular hasn't been done properly and so I'd be having the installers back out to fix.

Dio - the batteries are no different to the batteries in your laptop/EV/other device. In fact, other than being bigger capacity, they are pretty much exactly the same. They charge when you generate excess electricity from the panels and discharge when demand>panel generation.

Although they add to the cost, they reduce the payback time overall. You can add them in later and it's not expensive to do so - they just plug into the inverter.

Roughly speaking (very rough!), I found the breakdown of the system I bought was ~1/4 fitting/paperwork/supplier costs (scaffolding and service costs), ~1/4 battery, ~1/4 panels, ~1/4 inverter. I then added extra panels, but this didn't add a huge amount.

The other thing to be aware is that the fitter I used offered an 12month interest free loan up to a certain amount (think I had to pay 10% deposit no matter what). There were eligibility checks as per any other loan though. If you can't afford the upfront costs, this could be an option.

If anyone here plays Trader then grab me at 9 while you can and hold on as I'll only be going up from now on. I'm also after the 50 investors badge so I won't upload my 2 miles just run/walked until this evening.

Thanks for all the info guys, it's not something I'd really thought about before, but I might look into it further.

Had my first bill from Octopus, since switched from Shell. Reading accurately from my smart meter and tariff is correct, so all good.

Balance on the account is still wrong, out by one month's DD, but I'm just going to leave it for now as I expect they'll sort it automatically at some time.

End of march readings and my credit down to £29.50 :-)

I increased the payment to the recommended level yesterday and rounded up to the next round number. Eon today told me they had changed my payment and put it down a couple, of quid. I’ve just rounded it back up.

Quite happy with where things are now with monthly cost about 12.5% up from where it was before prices went haywire.

Octopus refunded me the £300 I requested but forgot to update my credit balance. I have reminded them :-)

Muttley - good on the refund.

I'm going to contact Octopus soon if they don't correct my credit balance within the next month.
