I've just agonised for an hour or so and decided to roll on to a variable tariff from 15th July rather than take any of the (very short / limited) fixes that are out there right now. Need to keep a close eye on things though as I'm not 100% convinced this is the right decision!

Well, we've been in our new home for about a month and the energy situation is coming into focus at bit. We've found that the oil-fired heating system is very efficient and only needs to be on for 10 minutes in the morning and 10 in the evening, it looks like the previous owners didn't have much of a clue about these things and I've completely reset the programmer and turned the boiler temp down a bit. I mentioned that we had 1000 litres of oil delivered last week, that nearly topped us up so I shall be monitoring that closely over the next six months. EoN have sent our monthly energy bill, after the government discount we used about £70 of electric. The Aga is turned off of course, but EoN must have access to historical data from the smart meter and are still forecasting that we will use £3300 of electric this year! We are paying £188 a month and have about £500 in credit, so we'll see how it goes. To be perfectly honest, I am thinking that the bloody Aga may never be switched on, but then it does provide heating for the kitchen so we'll see how that goes. Interestingly, there was nearly no copper pipe insulation in the "garage", this is the old cow byre where the boiler is situated. It looks like the boiler room of the Ark Royal, there are miles of copper pipe and the heat loss must be tremendous. I have bought a truckload of insulation and am currently engaged in lagging all the pipes, just one of my many jobs to do. |

p.s. an appeal to the collective wisdom: The smart meter is a Liberty 100 model. Does anyone have one? We don't have an IHD and would love to know which models are compatible with it.

I don't have a smart meter, but a google implies that a Pipit or Chameleon IHD should work with your Liberty 100. Caveat emptor and all that...... community.bulb.co.uk |

Chameleon IHD is what we have, supplied by Octopus with the smart meter. Works fine. Try asking EON as well NE? They are the ones who *would* fit a smart meter so you're saving them money/hassle by having it already and just requesting the IHD. You might get it for free? Everyone loves a trier?! G

I did ask EoN. They declined to provide a freebie, but pointed me at an expensive model that I don't want to buy.

Is £90 a year much of a saving? Haven't they gone up by £00s a year? Any drop welcome of course. G
