As I understand it ScPete, the only solutions if you don't have a parking place that you "own" and can put your own electric charger on is that you need to look for nearby commercial chargers e.g. a local car park or you would need to always charge away from home for instance at work. Not ideal though.

I think this, along with motorway/other convenient long distance charging are the main developments that still need to happen. We've posted some links about those changes that are coming (new housing including charge points at parking for flats etc.)

Sometimes if it's an *allocated* parking space, then they can put the charger station into the space.

But I suspect the developer/landowner needs to be involved which is the most likely sticking point.

ScPete - other question: what is your budget and motivation?

By which I mean, basically, if you've got loads of money, and if saving money per mile isn't one of your main drivers, then you can get a car with a big battery (350 or even 400 miles between charge) and charge always at high speed commercial charges - that would be 15p to 40p per kWh (£16 to £45 per 400 mile "tank" - still cheaper than petrol, but not as cheap as my £4 for 300 mile tank!)

If your 400 miles is a week or 10 days worth of driving, then a 1 hour charge while out shopping or something once a week or 10 days, isn't too onerous. No home charger required?

Don't know if this helps.

Hi HappyG,

It was a chat with my friends last week that got me interested in going electric. I generally drive 200 miles approximately for work, mainly on motorways.

I do feel bad about the amount of pollution I'm causing driving petrol car that much. Though for some of the journeys I could use public transport.

I looked at our work website, and I could lease a VW UP for say £250 a month

I guess it's also the attraction of getting a brand new car with all sorts of toys :)

That sounds good Pete. 32kWh is probably 150 miles range or a bit less real world. Will that work for you?

hmm, I went to check after you posted that G. We've done 300-odd miles in the new car @ 36.7 kWh/100 miles. No doubt it's car dependent, of course.....

WW - are you the big XC40 Electric? I think the smaller cars do better?

The VW Up claims 161 miles for a 32kWh model. My 64kWh Kona claims 300 but is probably 280 miles at best.

I think max is car dependent. And then real world is driver/driving and conditions dependent (and always in the downward trajectory!) :-) G

Depends on the right foot weight too WW. I've got. 46kWh battery and summer range is definitely north of 180 miles. But I can drop it down a lot lower than that especially if I were to drive above 70 on a, ahem, German autobahn where such driving would be legal.

Keeping it down to about 60-65mph gives much much better efficiency (and therefore range).

My 100 mile each way trip on Sunday should suit it quite well - it's an A road dual carriage way and keeping it a bit under 70 suits me. :-) G

We've just had a total nightmare crawling along the M4/M5 at an average of 10mph in the heat.

How would that work with an EV if the battery was running low and you were stuck in traffic?
