HG, I dont disagree with most of what you say and the route to a referendum is not clear. In fact it is clear but its blocked.

I guess what I am trying to say is what I see as the route to get there. The approach that Sturgeon is trying to follow will not work. Sturgeon and Blackford rejected the current strategy a few years back as being unworkable.

I disagree on the SNP at Holyrood. Performing better there is a very good way to get people to believe you have a sound approach to independence. the current SNP strategy is not getting enough support and needs to change.

'Nicola Sturgeon says the Tory leadership contest is “deeply undemocratic” and underlines her argument for a fresh vote.'

This kind of thing annoys me. Was it undemocratic when Sturgeon became First Minister post 2014 despite Salmond having lost the referendum and Sturgeon not having been elected as SNP leader ?

For me it's an issue of democracy, which is a buzzword for NS and the SNP. They go on about Brexit changing things, there will.always be something changing. Yes voters wany to keep trying until they get the result they want. But No voters have to continually defend the status quo, and don't get to try again if they lose. That's not democratic. Had the vote, recently, end of!

Is it the same about income tax? Did we just have one vote and the govt set a rate which cannot change? Because “democracy”.

I don’t think that word means what you think it means.

The issue for me is that less than 50% is being used as a claim democracy is being denied.

I don’t think you can compare our votes for the annual rates and thresholds with the determination of independence and nationhood which is a permanent dismantling of hundreds of years of legal and social structure and the splitting of a country into two.

It would be equivalent to me telling my wife my annual prostate exam is similar to her giving birth to our son while having her leg amputated.

... a permanent dismantling of hundreds of years of legal and social structure and the splitting of a country into two.
I'm much more of an enthusiast for history than Scottish Independence. And on that basis I'd suggest that you might be overplaying the end of a 315 year political construct between two countries.
