I didn’t risk it when I did 100k from Guildford - meant I had approx 1000-1500 to ride - I made it (just)!

I've never been refused, but it's a few years since I've done it without booking. It was something I did regularly about 10yrs ago, but only using off-peak services on local routes. For longer journeys, or with time constraints, I'd probably book (which is operator dependent) I used to get to fell races by getting the train to the nearest station, and riding to the start. Indeed it was partly through me making an error in how long it would take that YP and I met! |

That’s impressive that there are already people using it seeing as it’s only been open a week! Can you access it from Thorner? I used to ride that way and cross the A64 to Scholes but it looks like the road is closed, to cars at least. I was pleasantly surprised. Older couples on ebikes, and even an adapted trike, amongst the acoustic ones. I think you should be able to get from Thorner, but didn't try that way myself. I don't believe the direct route past the cemetery remains in existence, but you can turn west and join ELOR and either head all the way south to Scholes or do a very short section on the A64 (similar to before). The section from the A64 south isn't fully finished, but not far off, and rideable. |

I wonder if it would be safer to get the train out then cycle back? Any train issue won’t leave you stranded then. Of course you will then be fairly committed to the ride. Planning a gravel ride from Aviemore tomorrow. My usual buddy is on a bike packing adventure so I might be solo. Although a friend may join me. |

Want to cycle faster? Stick on yer bib shorts and top then decide a mile into the ride you could do with a pee, and have nowhere to go, or the means to do it discreetly. You'll just fly round your route....... 🙂 |

I am just back from a 50k ride. Midway through, I reached what I assumed was a short queue for roadworks. I crept up the outside, as there was nothing coming the other way. Then about eleventy-million cyclists came past from a road on the left, complete with cavalcade. The clues were all there - the cyclists standing at the side of the road with their phones out. The helicopter hovering above. When the public were allowed to go about their business, I carried on cycling, along the same route as the cyclists. What I didn't expect was that when I rode through East Leake, the whole town and all their friends were out on the pavements. I got a massive cheer from an entire primary school of trigger-happy kids all sitting on the pavement. I gave them all a salute! Having been flagging a bit before any of this happened, the next couple of miles were the fastest of my entire route fetcheveryone.com/t-21005091 tourofbritain.co.uk |

Guessing they'll have been at 'blink and you'll miss it' speed. Those boys are rapid.
