It’s hard to see where they turn right now. Batting is the major problem and only Root deserves a place with an argument to be made for Malian. The rest of the top 7 are not good enough.

We could all see that this series was doomed before a ball was bowled. Almost no first-class cricket, back-to-back tests, no family allowed, covid bubble with the team cooped up in a hotel.

West Indies are one of the weaker test teams. Pick a team to go there and do its best to win the series. No point saying this player isn't good enough and just replacing them with someone not quite as good.

Sack Silverwood, hire a pure red ball coach.

Take the Captaincy off Root, tell him he won’t be playing any tests until next Winter. He’ll be a broken man after this, let him go have some fun - white ball, domestic, Hundred. Just enjoy batting and winning again. We may get another 5/6 years of the best batsman in a generation.

Pick a young red ball squad on 2 year central contracts. Map out a pure red ball itinerary for them - tests, maybe spells playing domestic or shield cricket in Aus.

Yes we’ll get thrashed. Yes most will sink. But maybe, just maybe a few may emerge, refine their technique from the 100% red ball exposure to be viable test cricketers. They’ll grow together, a leader may emerge.

Then reintroduce a few of the white ball tyros - Archer, Livingston etc in time for the next home Ashes. They’ll need to commit to red ball for the year.

I am not convinced anything will change. It is not important enough to the ECB that England win the Ashes in Australia. I.e. it doesn't impact the amount of money they can earn. I am sure they would love to win the Ashes but if they don't what happens? There is no incentive I can see for them to make changes. England have lost 6 of the last 7 series in Australia. Why would this be any different?

It won't change until red ball domestic is reformed so that it is challenging for players with test potential.

I don't blame the current players, I blame the ECB

My plan might be shit, but I bet it’s better than the ECB’s plan to try and scrape a couple of home wins on juicy swinging English green toppers then declare crisis averted….
