Good article covering England’s stats over the past few years: bbc.co.uk A few stand outs: * No team has ever lost more Tests in a calendar year than the nine defeats suffered by England in 2021. * England have been bowled out for under 150 a joint-record eight times this year. * England's quarter-to-half-century conversion rate of 35% is the worst by any team other than Bangladesh in their hapless early forays in Test cricket since 1999. * Only three of England's 15 Tests this year did not feature a duck by one of their openers. |

The reason the county red ball game is full of medium-paced trundlemerchants is because they take wickets. The reason they take wickets is because the batting is mediocre. The reason that mediocre batsmen survive is all the *good* bowlers disappear off to national teams never to be seen again. And the reason the trundlemerchants aren't carted for 8 an over day in day out is all the *good* batsmen disappear off to national teams never to be seen again. Under the current structure, Championship cricket is mediocre by design. Bewailing the lack of talent is to miss the point. Anyone properly good in the county game is removed with unseemly haste. |

and that's without the impact of everyone with any skill being more interested in making their fortune in the IPL, BB, 100 etc. And who can blame them: putting a million in the bank for your family is probably a higher priority than representing your country with your best performance in a test. |

I still don’t understand why other countries don’t have the same degree of trundlemerchants (cracking word) and cranky techniqued dilettantes as surely their ‘talents’ are also hoiked out for BBL/IPL tests etc. Or in the case of South Africa, to play for another country. *And as long as I have a hole in my aris I’ll be saying Ed Sheeran is a pointless dullard.😉 |

Much though I love you like a brother and respect you as an athlete, I will never forgive you for introducing me to Swans. Never.

Mrs TRO said the same thing, and had to endure an entire gig. Her revenge was chilling, complete and devastating: Robbie Williams.

I've read their Wikipedia entry. I can see how one might be a devoted follower of Swans and England cricket. I am not feeling sparky enough today to have a listen though.
