the education of our children is a worry, with 3 children in my household all having had their exams cancelled i initially thought we were the ones losing out , but i think it is really the year 10s and 12s who have the worst situation. its going to be a struggle for them to catch up with where they should be and what i hear about the schools around here the quality and quantitiy of online teaching is wildly variable and then add to that the variability in how the children engage with what is offered to them.

I de recognise of course that I have an incredibly lucky position in that I'm already working from home in a beautiful bit of countryside, and the virus hasn't even hit anyone close to me. I don't mean to sound flippant about it at all, it's a terrible situation for many people. But scientifically fascinating.

I agree on the flights, it all seems quite rushed, ablbeit from a business perspective I can see the benefits.
I suspect I will need to make a call and write off my flights. The thought of sharing a slight with 300+ others does worry me. We dont know what we will find when we get there and then if we did pick up the virus in Turkey whats the care like and would we get home.
I have a travel insurance policy which covers 3 of the 5 of us going and one other is covered by a separate policy. I presume that would not cover our flights, but also wonder if we chose to go, would they cover us while there given what we know.
I am really kind of hoping Turkey flights resume 15th July, given my flight there is just before that point

one of my hubbys colleagues has a holiday to Kenya booked early July. he has been offered a chance to defer it but is adamant he is going. he's nuts (ImhO)

Its a really tough situation to be in, albeit if there is the offer to defer that should make it a no brainer on financial terms and also sensible from a personal health impact.
I am resigned to having no proper holiday this year, but have my fingers crossed that we keep the good weather. I had Friday/Monday off and 4 days in my back garden felt like I had been sat under an umbrella on a foreign promenade watching the world go by and passing the time by reading my book, chatting to my family and checking fetch. I could manage 2 weeks of that with the occassional day out if rules allow, If its cold and pissing down though !!!!

I wonder why the DfE have said only 25% of Y10 and Y12 when it's looking for 100% of primary aged children to be back in a couple of weeks and there should be 100% of 4 year groups (Nursery, Reception, Y1 and Y6) in from yesterday. (Should but isn't )

GM, cynically, I assume it's that child care for workers is more important than education of older children who don't need looking after as much. But maybe that's unfair?
Canute, sorry, just to explain my cryptic and intended to be comic "perhaps?!" meant "perhaps we can ask Canute" not casting aspersions on your scientific or clinical prowess in any way!
Thanks for your reply. So no data either way yet that the virus is waning in intensity either risk of infection or risk of seriousness of illness if infected? One can only hope.
Regarding holiday's maybe I'm just being selfish, as we don't regularly have a "summer holiday" in my family, but really, not being able to go to a specific summer resort doesn't feel like the biggest loss of the whole Covid-19 crisis. I sympathise about the loss of thousands of pounds for something booked if you don't get money back because holiday companies and airlines are playing canny on the travel rules.
There are lots of other lovely ways to spend a 2 week break from work I would have thought? Just treat it like Christmas and do indoor stuff with family? Or enjoy outdoors in your locale? And if the weather's sh*t, then do it with clothes on?
As I say, I'm possibly just being a bit self centred as we don't do the holiday abroad thing regularly, except to visit family. Actually, thinking about it, perhaps families with kids with special needs etc. may have important reasons to want to "get away" to somewhere special. Umm, perhaps I should have thought this through a bit more...?!

I think I read somewhere that primary age children are taken to school by their parents (in general) but yrs 10 and 12 rely more on school buses and public transport and also can't be trusted not to congregate by the sweet shop or chip shop on their way home, so it's not the numbers in school that is the issue but outside

picking up on one of your points HappyG, the older children need their schooling not for childcare but for their developement as people. with 3 highly motivated, intelligent and well adjusted young people in the house I can see their resilience being eroded with a lack of purpose and a lack of a sense of progression. Their immediate plans (ie the next few years) have been swept into uncertainty and they have limited contact with their peers who are suffering the same. Like i say mine are sensible. Im not surprised so many of them are boiling over and spilling out on to the streets in large groups, mine wont do that but they are so envious.
