A similar firm to mine sent the entire office home this afternoon as someone was ill after returning from Italy. We haven’t done similar but I would estimate half of our staff travel frequently abroad chasing the billable hours and we have offices in several hotspots! I guess much like the bomber the germs will always get through. I’ve started washing my hands more especially as I now commute by public transport. I’ve noticed I seem to have more of a winter cold / sniffles than usual and I put it down to no longer commuting by car. Washing hands may not make much difference though if the person sneezing near you hasn’t done likewise |

It does sound horrible for the family. The girl is isolated in her bedroom and family have been told that they can't spend time with her. Can leave food outside or just inside room and then wash hands thoroughly. Must be scary and lonely for a 15yo. I'm in and out of patient houses all the time, use hand gel and wipe down steering wheel, bag etc between visits. I'm not sure what our Trust guidance is if a family member is affected Agree it's very worrying if family/friends/loved ones have underlying health conditions |

Gosh, I hadn't realised that it was that level of isolation. How awful.

Was helping at an event where a school minibus was turned away from the event because some of the kids on board had just come back from a ski trip in Italy. Not sure if that was an over-reaction or just a sensible response, bearing in mind potential transmission would have been to a hundred kids from a dozen schools. Tempted to think it was sensible. While trying not to panic.... ![]() |

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I saw this interesting article from David Spiegelhalter (always worth reading) on uncertainties of coronavirus, making the point that the high scenario that has been leaked is very much one extreme and that reality might turn out to be rather more moderate: medium.com And I also found this interesting, from a TV program that was about a hypothetical flu pandemic but seems like it could be fairly relevant. In this experiment, taking even quite simple action (regular hand washing!) to slow the spread makes a big difference not just to the rate of growth but also to the total number of cases. twitter.com FWIW while the ~1% death rate gets the most attention the number of people who could need hospital care under the high projections is many times greater (I think 10-20 times or thereabouts) than the total number of hospital beds. People who dismiss the issue on the grounds that it only kills 1% and most of them are already old/ill are perhaps missing the biggest threat. |

Yeah I work in the central NHS and the hospital overload thing is by far the scariest component. The case fatality rate goes up if you can't provide the right medical care and hospitals are full at this time of year anyway. I see a world where a lot of elective activity gets cancelled which is horrid in itself because if you're waiting for an op in pain or are worried your aneurysm is going to rupture or need cancer surgery, it doesn't feel very 'elective'.

It’s definitely worrying time but I can’t help thinking there is a lot of overreacting, don’t get me wrong I’m not being flippant or blaze I know this is a serious flu and it’s potential to kill many more people but I feel the world is over reacting - I’m not medically trained and don’t know at the coal face how hard it must be seeing people coming in scared and with the potential to die. But I feel our flu kills people every year and we don’t have this reaction. Sorry if I’m missing something crucial. I know 2 elderly gentleman who died of pneumonia this year they didn’t have coronavirus but they died that is 2 more than have died if c-v in the UK. I had a virus in January when I read about the symptoms of c-19 I quite honestly had all the symptoms in the order the article said they occur I was the most poorly I’ve been but not once did the doctors say coronavirus, they said I was borderline pneumonia. I image the impact it can have on someone with underlying health issues and vulnerability but in vast majority of cases people won’t be worse than I was, I know many who had a lesser bug too. |

Without meaning to be alarmist, does anyone understand how they are calculating the fatality rate? The numbers coming out of China don't suggest a fatality rate of 1 percent to me (not that I trust the figures from China in any way). But if you look at the number of people in Italy for example who have died (52) versus the number who have recovered (149), it seems to be a very long way from 1 percent. Even if you take the total number of cases worldwide (which would include people who have been diagnosed today so obviously wouldn't be dead yet) and then the total number of deaths it would be over 3 percent, and that would be based on an assumption that all of the 40,000 people who currently have it will all survive. |
