um
forest plodder - we’ve been to the Royal Oak (Fritham), High Corner Inn and Red Shoot in the last few weeks, all in their gardens, and felt no risk at all.

How is corona virus affecting my family? Posted on the other thread but today has incensed me so much I’m posting here as this is exactly how the North East lockdown is affecting my family
8:41pm 895 posts 0 JR [Removed by moderator] I had my almost 80 year old mother (sole career for my 80 yr old father with vascular dementia) in tears & absolutely today fearing a fine or worse if we visited her or she left home on anything other than an essential basis. [Removed by moderator] I'm incensed by this today - beyond rage that my parents & other elderly people are being made to be scared witless.

I haven’t been anywhere where staff aren’t wearing masks- but been in a few situations where the mask is sitting just under the nose.. on the whole have felt very safe when eating out though. Stick to places with outdoor dining wherever possible.

I don’t think anybody on this thread has ever said it’s difficult reconciling family commitments with the possibility of going to the pub

JR it’s always been said even in the early days that if vulnerable people need it it’s ok

JR it's horrible having ageing parents who are scared and vulnerable. And the local rules make it even more difficult. We've the same here. Hope you are able to calm and reassure your mum and dad.

JR - have you seen the Elderly Parents thread? I lurk there and it's really supportive.

JR - I favour a lock down. I haven't been in any pubs/cafes/restaurants. I am trying to keep my 75 year old MiL who had double pneumonia earlier this year and has various other health issues safe. Can you explain the current guidance to your mother in clear, simple terms, preferably in person (you are and always have been able to visit her as she is a vulnerable person) even if you do that from a metre away standing on her doorstep? This isn't easy.

Running on the Spot
Forgive me for jumping in, because I understand this is a very emotive topic ( and thread). I have a very vested interest with a 94 year old father - I feel qualified to have a say. Like a lot of things in recent years the general public seem funneled into opposing sides on issues, you are either city or united so to speak. The more debate there is, the less open minded opinion becomes. From my perspective, the economy needs to operate as near normally as it can, to provide the revenue to fund society. So a full lockdown, while it keeps people "safe" is not sustainable. We need clear, sensible, consistent, practical rules, that are fully supported, and the best use of technology. Other countries have managed this, our old friends in Germany seem to be on a better path. All this requires personal responsibility and good messaging to the target audiences. My frustration is with the weak, clueless, spineless leadership given from the very beginning of the pandemic, and not with those supporting united or city.
