Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Does it have to be perfect fozzy, or is there some benefit to it being simply reasonably good?

I couldn’t imagine Koreans ever wanting to get on a bus whilst sweaty (they would hate the idea of causing inconvenience to others in this way).

I wouldn’t be surprised if these shelters are a tokenistic way to appease what is a very health conscious (to the level of it being a national hobby / paranoia ) population. They’re very into testing temperatures etc when arriving at the airport. Maybe more for appearances sake, but experience says anyone wearing a uniform takes their role very seriously and solemnly.

It does sound like an expensive option for very limited benefit. Also implies they think it's here to stay, to make it worth that level of investment.

Ptb - my point is that it's ineffective. Because you're getting false positives and false negatives.

If you're going to start excluding people from doing things based on a method/test, it has to be accurate.

All tests will have a margin of error, but I'd argue that the MoE on this type of test is huge. Simply because I can identify two major sources of uncertainty off the top of my head!

rf_fozzy re temp checks, we recently bought an IR thermometer and Mr Frag has been doing lots of testing of himself in different circumstances eg having done a hard bike ride, straight from the shower, hot weather etc etc to get a baseline. Exercising doesn't see to increase your forehead temperature, if anything it lowers it a tad as your blood flows to your skin to try and cool you down. We're having this argument with our diving club as we're trying to insist on taking the diver's temperatures on the way in, but head coach says it won't be reliable as they'll all have been warming up first *rolls eyes* We had a kid turn up last week who insisted to his parents he was fine, then was sick later on that day as he had a temperature - not sure some of them realise there's a pandemic going on and we all need to be careful...

If we're going to exclude people from doing things based on an unproved testing method, I want to see data.

Internal temperature will correlate with fever, I can see that (and it's well established).

Skin temperature?

Show me data. With uncertainty well quantified please.

On the UV thing, it's UVC that they use for disinfecting, not the UVA or UVB which affects our skin, which is definitely to be avoided http://www.uvresources.com/blog/uv-c-lamps-staying-safe/. I think it should also be a certain narrow range of wavelengths to avoid creating ozone, which is an irritant to us. There are potentially useful applications of it in this context - for example it could disinfect everything in a hotel room very quickly. If you search for "UVC lamps" you'll see a lot of handheld devices being marketed now.
