Back to science? Or is it guff? bbc.co.uk Is there a simple explanation of how 'source' can be determined by country. Is it stats, or do the Coronavirus genetics somehow change depending on location? |

The way I read it (and I could be wrong - it was a skim read as I'm currently on shift) they are trialling a finger prick antibody test and the accuracy of that was going to be tested by taking the swabs at the same time (it didn't make much sense to me that they would do a swab for live virus for correlation though I guess they could just be doing them at the same time that people were getting tested?). It's the REACT 2 research I think.

On the antibody testing we've finally had the orders though for all the new tooling and the 1st 10 million sets of components to make the testing strips , which should then be followed up with a further 50 million sets, our customer only just having got the order from the Government ……….

Um, I think even within the one "entire" Covid-19 genome there are minor variances in the genetics that make it possible to determine "parentage" and "siblings", rather like we can determine parentage if individual people if we have suitable DNA samples. I'd read it as being further evidence that the viral infection only took hold across as wide a base and as quickly as it did because there were multiple points of infection. Oh, and that we should have had an international travel ban & quarantine in place in the first weeks of March onwards. Hindsight is wonderful. |

I heard the lead researcher being interviewed on R4 this morning um. As I understood it, you can see the transmission chain for each of the distinct types of CV, by gene, so you can see where the first person was, for that strain. Therefore you can tell how many "patient zeros" there were (different one for each different strain). And if you know where that patient zero came from then you know when and where that strain was introduced to the country. The main point was that it was introduced hundreds of times between end Feb and end March. If there had been a strict quarantine on entry at that time, every one of those introductions could have been eliminated from spreading through the country. Indictment of the failure to do early test, quarantine and lockdown early? G |

that looks legit to me um also based on what the twitterers say. I think it is based on detailed analysis of the genetics. There is probably a certain amount of modelling involved in order to determine the structure of the overall tree as they won't have enough samples to robustly determine how it branched. Eg how quickly it mutates.

So is the corona virus now tagged China + Spain + England (or Scotland or ...) now? What is the tagging? Is it a mutation/variant at the DNA sequencing level ? |

Down in DNA sequencing, I'd imagine. There are no "gross" differences to be seen with a microscope. Even using an Electron Scanning one, I understood CV-19 to look pretty much like every other CV. (Although the idea of a tartan coated corona virus is quite entertaining. )
