So - what do we make of the reported sudden fall in infection rates? Could there really be a miraculous end in sight?

So how many actual people were tested? Are they telling us that now, or is it still just "number of tests?

It's been between 1500 and 2100 for the past 10 or 12 days. There was an ONS report suggesting fewer cases but that was quite old relative to the daily numbers. Ie it had dropped throughout May or something. But it seems to have stopped dropping.

On the news just now they said that infections (outside of hospitals and care homes) were down from 8000 to 5000.

I think that's based on the ONS survey which is roughly speaking looking back at May. So that drop is relative to the start of May, and it seems pretty flat for a week or so now.
