Just looked over at the worldometers data tables. Puts some things in context. The UK has conducted 32m tests - behind only China, Russia, USA and India. In terms of tests per 1m popluation, we're the highest ranked country with > 10m population size (just ahead of USA). Broadly I'd say they were "good" statistics (though test volume is in part a funciton of how bad the outbreak is of course). We've slipped down the table a little in terms of deaths per 1m population, though we're still in the upper tiers there - ruling out San Marino, Andorra, we'd slot into 10th behind USA and Mexico, 5x South American nations, Spain and Belgium. |

Popped into Edinburgh today, which was a little bit naughty. Trains and shops felt very safe as usual. Two cafes I visited were OKish, although not fully compliant.

I'm sure more testing is good, you're right. Although having more testing earlier would have helped, and linking the testing to a functional "trace and isolate" system would be nice now too. Lark - a couple of hours ago now (!) but I was using "public health" in the broad sense, not simply the sense of 'minimising deaths due to Covid'. The complicated sense of public health, which leads to some tough choices about what to restrict, and what to allow. But that's what governments are supposed to be doing. I don't honestly know what I think is the best thing to do about Christmas. But I'm pretty sure that what will happen is some wishy-washy messaging, and some more references to common sense. That should do it chaps, pass the port will you? |

That's encouraging stats on testing, larkim. Just need to use the information we get from the tests. If the positives were more apparent maybe we could see a glimmer of optimism and the population could get behind a national effort.

My friend’s son is in a school bubble where a kid tested positive at the start of half term. Nobody from school seems to have notified the bubble to isolate, which seems a dereliction of duty when kids will be out and about at half term. It’s only a class bubble too so just 30 parents to contact. In the meantime poor ds1 is still stuck indoors at uni, 3 out of 7 tested positive so hopefully that means the chances of him getting it via his household are lower now! |

National effort is long gone. We had that goodwill March to maybe May, July if we are generous. Now 7 months in you are battling weariness with it all, the weather turning, infections rising and the real financial hardship is about to ramp up. |

Even the super efficient Germans can’t get to grips with T&T, Merkel sadly stating that they can only track 25% of cases before organising a stricter lockdown. It really seems to be an impossible job once the virus is so widespread. If anyone had suggested that we track common cold transmission before this pandemic arose they would probably have been laughed at. Apparently the genesis of the approach was the success in tracking STDs/AIDS but coronaviruses don’t behave like that. Time to try something else?

I do think that we need to remember that it's not just us that aren't doing very well - the news isn't good from most of Europe let alone beyond.
