It would be really nice if restrictions were lifted for Diwali and my birthday but I guess that is a little selfish. Cannot see how a Christmas break from restrictions would be fair on other members of our society at a time when we are all meant to be in it together for the good of all.

No, that's certainly true DocM. In the end if there's a Christmas decision it will be purely political with the square peg of "science" whacked with a massive piledriver into the round hole of "political expediency".

Everyone in the country would be allowed the same freedoms. It would an oppportunity for all to see family for a couple of days if they so chose.

Could be done over New Year and avoid any cultural connection.

That would suit fine BK. But worth bearing in mind that the two consecutive bank holidays of XD and BD make 25th Dec a more sensible timing choice. Plus New Year has a fairly well embedded association with getting rat-arsed and socialising wildly; would be better to try to use the "quiet day with your family" tradition(ish) if the guard was to be temporarily let down.

(When does Scotland lose a BH, by the way, in compensation for having 2nd Jan as a BH?)

Yeah what ever your race, religion, taste in music. 25th and 26th we will ease restrictions. If we are really nice 25th-28th to take in both bank holidays.

Rule of 12 indoors. Do your worst. Back to normal covid life from the 29th.

I take issue with the "We are a Christian country". But I'd probably better bite my tongue! :-) G

The census may say much higher % than e.g. Muslims or Hindus or Pagans. But count the number who are actually in Christian churches on a Sunday and I think you might find a very different proportion of those actively engaged in different religions.

And Christmas has very little to do with Christianity for most of our British society.
