It doesn't appear to very easy to translate a postcode to a placename using public data. That's my conclusion after 5 minutes with Google. I found one part list but no source for it.

Even without that, you probably know a fair number of postcodes.

It's probably more interesting if a zone is lost through capture than if it's lost through the passage of time.

If you get a message "you have lost control of" then that's your own fault for not naming your owned zones. All my zones are named. And the first thing I do on winning an unnamed zone is to name it" :-)

So I run 1000 miles across the Arctic and am expected to give names to 10000 zones? :-)

Chris - doesn't the google maps API let you do the necessary reverse geocoding?

developers.google.com

I haven't played about with it enough to know how it copes with co-ordinates that don't map exactly to a street and all the other possible problems, but it does seem to correctly return an address from a latitude/longitude GPS location.

Not sure if this will help or not, but if you use streetmap.co.uk there is a conversion facility at the bottom of the page in very little letters that translates postcode to map references etc. If you put in the postcode you will get the map, but I'm guessing you want the code that does that?

I think Chris said that he could already do lat/long to postcode conversion (the OS provides an open API to do that.) It's converting lat/long to a placename that is trickier.
