If you keep GPS on and the boat is moving then you distance will be all wrong so it'll muck up your stats, do you want this? If you run whilst on the move then turn off GPS I reckon. If you are moored then game on - fill your boots!

I used my Garmin to note the starting point and direction, then I manually changed the course to the correct number of miles. Thus I have explored two small bits of the North Sea, but not all the zones I was actually running in.

as long as you run up and down the boat, assuming it goes in a straight line at a constant speed your mileage will be pretty accurate - what you gain in one direction you'll lose in the other :)

Where I live (London), the grid is 1.3857 km east west but 2.2251 km north south. Seems to me if you run east west you hit a lot more squares, any tactics on this?

You need a mathematician for the logically correct answer, but the practical answer is to run E-W along a road that is very close to the E-W zone boundary, and every 0.88 miles take a slight detour across the boundary and back again. You can make that more efficient still if, having done your N-S bit you can stay that side of the boundary until you have crossed an N-S boundary.

It is surprisingly easy to do this in London. Whence I have the whole of London in my explored zones.

If you do a loop, running E-W for a long distance, starting from just inside a zone and finishing just inside a zone, then popping far enough north or south to hit the next line of zones and then running W-E back to your start? Not very easy in the most of the UK.

Where I am in Texas this week, I can run W-E very easily (along the river) but going North is impossible (no bridges) and the roads to the South have no pavements/sidewalks.
