Thanks Jabberknit. My Mum may well have done that, but it has been half a century since she made any bread pudding for me, and although she sometimes got me to work the mixture for her I wouldn't have paid much attention to it.

There is a significant difference between bread pudding and bread and butter pudding though. Bread pudding is a lot more stodgy and doesn’t have custard in it.

My gran used to make bread pudding, it was like a stodgy fruit cake and absolutely delicious. Bread and butter pudding, served with custard, is also delicious but nothing like bread pudding. (Delia has a recipe for bread pudding in her Christmas recipe book, tastes very similar to my Gran’s). |

Bread and butter pudding is one of those things that gets a poor rep as a school meal but can be really good when well done.

I've made gigantic bread puddings for Fetchfests in the past. And my best ever bread and butter pudding (a completely different thing) included lemon curd. I don't really bake now, though, because the oven isn't reliable enough and I don't have enough mouths to feed.

Very different things! Bread pudding (brown stodgy cake) is an excellent post-race restorative! Bread and butter pudding is an excellent post-roast finish!
