I used manual lapping on my watch for the marathon, and got funny results for miles 13, 16, and 23. Always fun to have something else to worry about on top of the normal struggles!

some of the mile markers were definitely out, even I noticed that with my old-school sports watch (no Garmin for me!)

I don't remember which ones, it's all a blur
I remember wondering whether it was deliberate, like they do it to play tricks on you!!

The mile 16 and mile 23 markers were both out by almost one third of a mile. And the Metric could do with better markers of its own.

I remember being frustrated by the Metric markers when I ran it - too much mental maths required in the final miles for me!

Manual lapping is definitely the way to go - so long as you can trust the mile markers!

Looking at last year's runners' traces, it seems last year was short (closer to 16.0/16.1) and the metric runners this year ran the same route up to the turning down Dee Lane and just carried on past Grosvenor park to the official finish. They are a superb organising team, so I don't like criticising them, but maybe they've just been a bit more blase about the distance for the metric and don't bother with an official precise measurement.

Thats the one clare, its done by the Edinburgh marathon people and remains up here. Our Kilomathon was also 2010 started and finished out by the airport, but it still exists in the 1/2 and also a 1/4 format running from Ocean terminal to Murrayfield Stadium

For what it’s worth the 13 mile marker was out too (13th mile was short iirc) The 9min mile commented on it - “Don't worry about it, it’s way out” was their verdict. I was out of earshot by the time we passed mile 16, which I don’t recall having an impression of (I think I may have been too deep in conversation with Pikelet). I didn’t see mile 23 at all!

Got something to say?
