Alpkit Gamma is a good bargain choice but I use a Lensor MH10 regularly. Great compromise re price, comfort and actual light. Rechargeable too

I like my Kalenji (decathlon) chest light. I found a head torch doesn’t show much definition on the ground, and if it’s cold it also lights up your breath which I find distracting! In mist/fog it’s impossible to use, though if severe a chest torch probably not much better.

How much a head torch illuminates the ground is going to be related to the power, after taking part in a night fell race I realised that 1000 lumens was the way to go, naturally on poorly lit streets I don't need to use that setting. All the chest lights I have seen people wearing are more like an aid to being seen.

I was running through the woods during a scouts night-navex last week using a headtorch and, although it's bright enough, I found that every time I looked about the torch beam (obviously) came away from the path. I was thinking that a combination of chest torch and head torch might be a good mix. Interested to read what others think. |

used a chest torch for the first time yesterday. was a bit worried that the strap only going over one shoulder would make it feel uneven, but it was so light it didn't make any difference. I thought that the light lit up the bits of the path i wanted it to, though it was only a 3 mile run on lit streets anyway. having a red light at the back can only be a bonus for all round being seen-a-bility. And it's USB rechargeable If you're running in a very dark area and, especially, through woods, I think ACs suggestion of using both is most sensible |

Headtorches? Surely it's all about the Milla Vega 5000?! Only if you have the £450 to spare though.... formline.uk It's what the orienteering pros use! |

I have a chest torch think I am on my 4th one as they don't last long especially if you fall over and break them but that was just 1 torch. I am thinking of a head torch but needs to be bright .I like The Saint recommendations and may even use both we shall see. |

I like the Alpkit Gamma, prefer non-rechargeable as it means if the batteries have died I can replace immediately. On which note, does anyone know of any pouches or carriers which would work to keep a reserve supply of (say) 3x AAA batteries attached to my headtorch? I don't want to replace batteries too soon so would like to take a set out with me as a backup rather than replace at home prior to running when there's potentially still some life left in them. Not everyone would like carrying the extra on their headtorch straps, but I think it would work OK for me on the Gamma. |

Noctural MTB cyclists tend to use a combination of a helmet mounted beam plus a bars mounted beam, echoing Angus's point about the combo of a beam which points where you're looking and a beam which points where you're heading being the best of all worlds. Though obviously cyclists tend to be moving a bit quicker than runners so perhaps the imperative there is a bit stronger.

I'm not sure what problem the OP was trying to solve. One advantage of a light source not right next to the eyes is that you get a little shadow relief around objects. I find that a handheld torch works well for this. You can get quite powerful ones for not much money. You get used to angling it while running. If it doesn't work out, it has more general-purpose uses for something else than a chest light has.
