Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The marathon investigation guy is US focused but he does cover worldwide majors and sometimes egregious cheating in smaller races.

I have little sympathy for the copied number couple at this year's London, it's a hugely oversubscribed event and it is made very clear what the penalties are for copying, falsifying or transferring bibs. I note he also had his hand in front of the bib a lot of the time obscuring the number, they just probably didn't think they'd get caught.

Parkrun corner cutters !!! When I set Newbury up I measured the course tighter than the cones were put out so it would be impossible to get a shorter measurement without really blatant cheating.

Lesson I learned from the randomness of cone placement at Basingstoke and watching people take shortest routes.

The 10k I organise does have a few shortcuts and I usually place a marshal in those areas to stop that - not that our race is high profile but it is a certified UKA event. I also forewarn our marshals to watch out for runners coming from odd directions.

Folklore in South Wales is that a Cardiff running club used a colour photocopier on their club entry when colour photocopiers were still a thing of wonder and got banned for a long time.
Derek the Marathon Investigations bloke covers any running-related impropriety that presumably meets a threshold of interest. I think Rossi is who started him off.
The person behind Study of Kip Litton Running never revealed themselves as far as I know.

The number photocopy story of course relates to London and I gather it was many copies.

It's actually something potentially very dangerous to do. A few years ago I spoke to the Great North Run PR man about it, and it can raise complications regarding medical treatment for injured / ill runners. Can't remember if it was a hypothetical or real situation he described.

Thing I don't understand about that is, why copy the number at all? Just make up a different one! Chances of meeting the real owner (and them noticing) are slim to none anyway.

There's an out and back on the Ribble 10k where it would be technically trivial to cut the course, but it's busy enough that you'd get noticed. A couple of years ago they put the turn in the wrong place (too soon) and basically blustered about it when I pointed it out to them. The first woman broke the course record and got an extra prize for it!

Yes, I saw the reason for the answer but he could be fitter than the others. I only really sweat when it's warm and often come home just a bit clammy.

Did anyone hear about mass cheating at a marathon in Mexico City?
