There used to be a thing about setting a record for overtaking the most people during a marathon. However, it doesn't sound that he was doing that. It begs the question as to whether race organisers won't disqualify a well known charity fundraiser in case it causes defamation to them. |

An interesting point. Tommy was a common sight at the bigger events countrywide, I believe - and I'd venture to say that carrying a bucket of cash that was steadily gaining in weight gave little incentive to walk, let alone run the full 26.2 miles.

A couple of notorious American marathon cheats have used the claim of crossing the mat last to get some kind of overtaking thing as cover for their real intentions of slipping off the course undetected and onto a bike or vehicle.

From Kip Litton in 2012 to another dentist in 2017: the profession seems to throw up more than its fair share of schemers and manipulators. marathoninvestigation.com |

I suspect habitual cheating may be a signifier of narcissism. Best avoid them.

Read it when it was originally published, a very poor pretext for an article to conclude with what any sensible person knows.

I also remember the article coming out originally and I agree it all seemed a bit pointless. I also recall being amazed (but not hugely surprised) at the vitriol thrown at him by some parkrunners online because he had dared to do such a thing.

Interesting article. I have heard of the marathon sleuth before but not sure whether he only covers US races, majors or more. It wonder whether people could be employed to cheat at races solely to see whether marshals, race directors and organisers are on the ball. Naturally, their results would be removed but feedback could be given to help tighten up certain areas of their events where a loophole could be found. |
