Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Will be interested to hear the eventual explanation for that rather impressive headline. One in three participants cutting the course deliberately in any event, let alone one that has chip mats in the skipped section, appears superficially unlikely but I've seen various theories being thrown around.

11,000 out of 30,000 took short cuts this year. Runners World has also said that in 2017, 6,000 runners were found to have not completed the full course. Then in 2018, a further 3,090 participants were disqualified.

Some are saying that their timing chips were faulty. Either, a lot of cheats take part or is it a case of some over-zealous race directors disqualifying anyone not recording a time at any timed section?

I think we've all had instances of not getting a split during a race but surely it would be evident on the other splits whether a shortcut had been taken or not.

Mixture of course cutting, biking, getting the Metro mentioned. Something very awry here for so many over successive years.

Sounds unlikely to me. I'm betting on a technical glitch underlying the suspicions.

I wonder if it was a genuine mistake rather than blatant cheating.

Not cutting corners in this one, but two DQs from leading runners at the Kielder Half-Marathon.

There's no reason to doubt that they ran the race, just with numbers registered to other people. The one who had already contacted the race organiser and been told he couldn't use the number must have realised that he'd be caught.

I have some sympathy with the view that the race organiser should have permitted transfers.
