One in three participants cutting the course deliberately in any event, let alone one that has chip mats in the skipped section, appears superficially unlikely but I've seen various theories being thrown around.

Runners World has also said that in 2017, 6,000 runners were found to have not completed the full course. Then in 2018, a further 3,090 participants were disqualified. Some are saying that their timing chips were faulty. Either, a lot of cheats take part or is it a case of some over-zealous race directors disqualifying anyone not recording a time at any timed section? I think we've all had instances of not getting a split during a race but surely it would be evident on the other splits whether a shortcut had been taken or not.

The one who had already contacted the race organiser and been told he couldn't use the number must have realised that he'd be caught. I have some sympathy with the view that the race organiser should have permitted transfers.
