Is that for cx Gobi?

I've still got a double cx range (46-36, 11-28 I think) and I've managed to get the front jammed up with mud before. I also spend almost all of my time in races in the 36 ring (especially when it's muddy). I'm not entirely sure I'm good enough to warrant a change in setup though, given I'm largely making up the numbers at the back.

This gear inch calculator might be useful for anyone wanting to change their gearing.

I think this whole conversation just shows that the manufacturers will always say "more is better" but the truth is that more is just more.

I run 11-42 x 32 single ring on my mtb and it's no race machine. I ride peaks, Afan, Coed y Brenin without any issues and just recently came back from a week in Spain riding in the mountains without any problems.

Anyone tempted to design their own bike?

I found this site which lists customer builds people have done or ordered through factories. There is list on the site of what factories will work with single build orders or a minimum order. People are getting steel / carbon / titanium frames built.

Looks quite cool to browse at least.

I like the idea of a design my own, which would probably be a cross between CX and fast commuter but in reality, my current bike is fine.

I thought about a custom built frame through Enigma Bikes but unless you are after something rather particular or an odd shape an off the peg frame should fit and be cheaper. Though I do love the look of this enigmabikes.com

As for a cross between a cx and fast commuter manufactures already do them, normally under the name of a gravel bike. My Specialized Diverge Elite falls under this and even though it's a bit odd looking I love it. Disc brakes with 27mm tyres and room for 32c cx tyres and just as fast as the Cannondale Supersix it replaced.

Oh yeah, I have no intention of getting a frame built - prices are about £700 for a titanium frame which is more than the cost of my whole bike at the moment. I might upgrade sometime next year.

I think you are 100% correct about getting off the shelf. Even with a cheap frame, once you start adding components, costs quickly overtake the same spec on a pre-built bike by quite a wide margin.

I do like the way gravel bikes are heading. I've been looking at some of the hybrid adventure bikes that are used for bike packing and Divide tours.

I like the look of the specialized Sequoia: bikepacking.com

and the Niner RLT 9 Steel: bikepacking.com

I recently spent £220 on new wheels for my bike which I am still paying off from the commute allowance. £2 per commute goes towards bike stuff in the aim it should pay for itself and still be cheaper than public transport. At the moment, I'm in the red at minus £230 bike fund

Good approach Kieren.

I use my 'car allowance' which more than covers all bike expenses as I have a beaten out old Golf as a car ! Best bike and MTb are certainly worth more then the car and my commuter probably is too :-)
