It's worth getting a multi-tool (a cheap one is fine) it's amazing what you can bodge enough to get you home if need be :)

The more you play with/tweak/adjust the bike at home the more confident you'll be should anything need attention when you're on the road.

Although, to be fair, very very little should ever go wrong on a modern bike.

getting back to fixed wheels etc. if yoy are serious about improving your cycling and pedalling form, then a winter on a fixed wheel bike will improve form and fitness so much. yes i know it's a faff to get set up, but you will see a massive improvement over the winter.

mind you you need to use use it on generally flat roads. peak district and lakes probably not the best places.

just think 30 mile ride is just that, no free wheeling or glass cranking.

Sorry, PL, you've lost me. Glass cranking?

A single speed I could go with. A fixie is another matter.

Yeah, PL, that counts me OUT! It is too hilly in the Black Mountains! I just stick with high cadence then...

glass cranking, sorry old cycling term, for those who never press on the pedals hard enough coz they are frigile and made glass. bit of a derogatory term.

you would gain alot from a single speed as you need to pedal fast, but still heave up over the hills. that you suit you Hann, as it's safer coming down.

I am tempted... one of my artists used to be a semi-pro and he did it, and told me to do it too...

Pilotlight, I like the sound of that. I get a bit frustrated at having to brake on the flat and downhill so I can keep pedalling and working.

Every time out I try to keep the thigh burn constant. Just came back from a 20 miler on trails. Nice.

IanM, you're braking on the flat in order to keep working?

You need bigger gears.
