Hey, all their bikes are fully set up and safety checked, you know....I've seen it on the telly.

you genius SB! it does indeed have a twiddly knob, I have twiddled it and it seems to have fixed the problem :-)
( something inside it snapped and flew off though, hopefully that was nothing important)

nah, I am sure it was just a clip thing to stop people tampering with it, probably just for transit, like they have on the footplates on wheelchairs, to stop them moving about.

If the adjuster has been set screwed all the way in when the bike's been assembled, and never been moved, it may well be stiff when you first turn it, as, if the end of the outer cable is rough it'll try to 'bind' to the body of the adjuster. As you turn it it'll eventually 'twang' free.

To be honest - the adjuster's just a fancy nut and bolt, unless the cable that goes through it is actually damaged it's unlikely it'd give you any trouble.
