The majority of creaks will sound like they come from the BB - if there's no play in the BB (or it doesn't feel or sound rough when you spin it by hand) then it's something else. Given the age of the bike the BB could probably do with some TLC, however I'd look elsewhere for creaks too - again given the age of the bike.

Probably quicker (and maybe even cheaper if you place a value on your time) to ask your LBS to give it a once over.

I'm half way through removing the BB from a 10yr old bike, it's corroded to the frame and proving to be a tricky nut to crack - I wish I'd asked the LBS to do it, although I'm learning alot about the bike and removal methods so it's been worth it for me - good luck :)

been there rhb, I've used heat in the past, but soaking in car oil overnight may help along with a big lever!

LOL PL :-) true, most likely :-)

I always used to ask my mum for a bottle of coke when I needed to clean the rust of my bike when I was a kid... worked a treat :-)

I had to call in outside help removing a corroded-on pedal once, so a BB is probably way beyond my powers of persuasion...

It's still not shifted. Another wd40 soaking applied and a new tool borrowed. Maybe tomorrow...

Hmmm, I don't seem to be able to remove the pedals of both the MTB and racer. I wanted to swap them so I can use my spd shoes on the racer... will have to venture into the LBS now with both bikes and look sheepish :-)

Pedal removal is easier than bb. The rule is back off - i.e. On the drive side it's anticlockwise with the spanner. This is as the pedals are threaded to naturally tighten as you pedal on the bike.

Get the pedal spanner in place then a tap on the end with a hammer and they'll shift.
