SW - no to cheapest thing you find in Halfords!

If looking at new, Decathlon make decent quality/good value bikes if you have a Decathlon nearby might be worth considering. The 2009 bikes are just about to be released so you may get a bargain 2008 model (or even more of a bargain for older models), if you are looking early enough you can make some mega savings.

For decent entry level bikes look at Trek, Specialized, Giant, GT, there are others, but these are the typical entry level makes.

Try looking at second hand bikes as well SW22, you are better off buying a good 2nd hand one for that money than a bad new one that will only give you grief.

On the subject of new bikes, your opinions please ladies and gents; Racer Hybrid or MTB?

Covering an average of 3500miles a year, all-weathers, rural and town, commuting to and from work, road conditions ranging from poor to very poor. And the rider is 6' 4" and 14 stone if that makes any difference.

With £500 to spend which 'type' of bike would give the best performance and reliability, ensuring many years of trouble free happy pedaling????

Thanks in advance.

B.B.
I would go towards a sturdy hybrid (not a racer hybrid), but I have little cycling experience.

My Marin is alright

I'd go for the hybrid/flat bar racer. 700c wheels are going to be comfier, you're not going to be lugging the weight of a needless sus front fork, and you can find an excuse to buy the world's coolest bike...

if you do not do any serious off -road stuff, hybrid, with good mudguards and tyres. invest in a set of schawble marathon plus tyres with a 28C or larger. they are tough and very puncture resistant.

reliability is down to the quality of the gear on the bike, boths types will have similar spec. look for a good quality frame with all the braze-ons for panniers etc, everything else can be replaced if needed.

sw22 there's a cracking Gazelle on ebay at the moment. it's an old steel frame but it will last a lifetime and the gear is good quality. I think it's based in south yourkshire area.
