Raemond
I saw a comic ages ago that described all the ways neuro divergent folks have to accommodate the irrationality of the NTs, and it was brilliant, but can I find it again? Of course not. |

Flatlander Re-reading your May 2021 blog, you wrote like a boxer inflicting blows on yourself: I could relate this to the mild annoyance, often escalating to frustration and a tacit reaction that was not as 'professional' as I'd have liked it to be. I came to realise that, to help foster understanding, knowledge of a student's prior learning, their motivation to learn, and their learning needs were of primary importance. My 'cognitive tool kit' grew over the years, largely as a result of explanations and methods I'd adapted and moulded from their positive impact upon many individual students who found the 'standard' input hard to absorb. It was this experience that augmented my own. Naturally, many times, I'd dip into my toolkit and find I had to try a method that was a 'close fit', or ask a colleague for advice. Closing a rather long post, if there is 'readiness' to learn, there needs to be an equal readiness to diversify the routes to learning. |

swittle I think a lot of our educators don’t have the capacity (time, energy, cognitive) to do the diversifying you are talking about. Sadly some also don’t have the will in the first place. Sadly when people are stressed they tend to cling rigidly to what is familiar.

"Wired wrongly" (in Raemond's words): - Does one way of being wired have to be wrong, and another way possibly not wrong? Would "wired differently" be a more accurate explanation, as well as avoiding the implication that somebody is wrong and somebody else is "right" and hence superior?

Columba that is true, I think Raemond was just being playful? rather than trying to suggest an element of superiority

Yes, Doc, it was a playful inversion of the way people usually talk about autism as being a problem, disorder, disability, impairment, etc.

Playful is the way I interpreted Raemond's earlier comment , and I also agree with Columba's suggestion. swittle, thank you for being one of those people who is prepared to make an effort to enable your students to do their best. |

The great dollop
well in other news, I've had my assessment concluded today, and apparently a Level 1 Autist. Not sure if I'm supposed to be tracking that on a Fetch monthly tracker somewhere so see my progress now ? I await the full report in a month and a bits time, but still not quite sure what to make of it. Oddly have a sense of being seen and accepted by at least one person, so that's a start. Any tips and help on adjusting to a diagnosis ? all welcomed because - change... |

WTF is level 1? Yesterday my youngest finally got his diagnosis! It’s been a long process! The dr doing his assessment observed him in school in March. I know they are busy but he knew then. Why couldn’t they let me know sooner. |
