DocM, I don't really have anything for you both, except to keep talking with each other and finding a new way of understanding and communicating, and being patient with one another. At least one thing going for you is that, as you wrote, you really are trying.

It’s difficult because as they say if you’ve met someone with autism you have met someone with autism, we are all so different, I have trouble understanding both my sons as we are all similar but they are also very different too!

I'm glad they have been of some help :)

I must admit I'm still muddling my way through everything. Had a bit of a mental breakdown this year and am slowly picking up the pieces again, but it's difficult to try and work out what's due to being autistic, what's due to ADHD, what's caused by genuine work stress, what's prompted by the pandemic, what's down to underlying anxiety & depression. It's all just a big mess :(

The great dollop
Evening all... I've had a four year wait for my assesment which is finally going to be on friday !

Just doing the pre-assesment questionnaires and answers has made me nod to myself I've clearly got traits and behaviours that would be more helpful to have professional agreement and personal acceptance of whatever is going on and that being me is ok.

Does anyone here have any experience of convincing their partner that knowing and diagnosis is a benefit, as opposed to their opinion that it's akin to a mental disability label and will be outcast by society ? It's proving a challenge beyond my communication skills... any advice welcomed !

Tough one, dollop. If they're not in a place to just take your word for it that you find the idea of an official' diagnosis helpful k annoyingly, they're technically correct if they argue that you can't know for certain how it will affect you until it happens... And being pedantic enough to have to admit that is one my autism super powers, yours may vary), they may be resistant believing anyone else either.

Stigma around 'mental disability' can be deeply ingrained, and they may believe they're genuinely protecting you (or trying to), I don't know to what extent you might find it helpful to keep that in mind if you're getting frustrated with them not listening to you. One thing it might be helpful to point out is that you will still have the choice to disclose your 'condition' or not once you have a diagnosis, so if they're the only one knows then what stigma are they worried about?

Aside from that, there are (Luckily) several autistic folks who were diagnosed later in life and have written beautifully about how it helped them, like Clem Blastow

Thanks Raemond, and many thanks for the link. Totally agree - it's about knowledge and self power, and it is a choice to tell other people and indeed how one labels it too. I've tried that angle to an extent - but it doesn't seem to have landed where it's being heard for now.

Thank you for the link - all information pointing in this direction is gratefully received ! Perhaps will be of interest to the others...

fingers crossed for friday and see what the professional thinks...

Quick update my child (20yr ) now has a diagnosis of ADHD in addition to autism. They are two weeks into medication and in general we are making slow progress forward. Both diagnosis have been a help.

Mr W was listening to this on R4 last night, and asked if I had thought I might be. I read a lot of ASD & ADHD assessments at work and do often think "yes, tick, tick, doesn't everyone do that, yes" but I never quite get round to taking a good look at myself.

Does anyone know what's involved in the diagnosis process for autism? Is there a test, how does it ...
