Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I think its always the weakest link, why all the big dudes wear straps

Only in Strongman competitions, straps are forbidden in Powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting competition as grip strength is part of the lift.
If you’re going to train grip you need to train all 3 grips, pinch, crush & support grip, not just support grip which is what you train by dead hanging and deadlifting.

In the interim if grip is failing you can always try a hook grip or a mixed grip to stabilise the bar on deadlifts. Mixed grip does expose the lateral biceps head on the supinated hand so increases the risk of strain and tendon tear. Hook grip will hurt your thumbs but is unlikely to do any damage.

I am only two months into lifting stuff up so grip strength hasn't been an issue for me yet.

I never had a callus in my life until 8 weeks ago though! I assume that's normal and not a technique/grip issue?

I get calluses at grips. Don't use gloves any more.

I feel fingers slipping on pull down even at light weights I use! :-) G

Maclennane maybe deadhanging so frequently is part of the issue. Are you hanging for time & are you deadlifting more than bodyweight?

slightly over bodyweight, yes, and deadhangs about 40s per go, 2-3 times a day

I do deadhangs during my rests, when I can, I find it hard to sit there and do nothing.

How close to your max hang time is 40 seconds? I wonder whether you’re giving yourself sufficient recovery time to make the adaptations and if cutting back the frequency would be a good idea.
