I think I'm getting better at the whole pain thing - but I have a long way to go.

I run my first ever 5k on 28 May.

I despise 10k, by the sounds of it 5k is even worse on the agony front, still.....

I'm a bit surprised you see this as a no-man's land as I think 20 to 25 mins for 5k represents such a massive range of difficulty. It's also where I've been for the whole 4 years i've been running regularly.

My PB (20:30 ish) is a couple of years old, and I'm currently running around 21:20..... I want under 20 badly. I really like the look of your intervals, Mic. I think this might be the time for you to do me a programme, Mic. I know I've said before that I didn't feel I could commit to it, but now I'm ready for a properly focussed summer. I have lots of 5k races lined up, and I'm not intending to race anything beyond 10k until July.

I'm clinging on hoping to get faster by osmosis here.

Mic/Gobes - have you gat a miracle cure to snap me out of 'LSR' mode?

greg

hardly when it is my primary sort of running.

at this point I could just throw in that most of you would improve without doing any intervals at all and just by doing more running.

I have done no specific 5/10 km work this year yet broke my 10km PB by a huge margin yesterday.

Gobi - yes, but to you even 10k represents but a smudge on your training plan, let alone 5k. Indeed that almost goes for the marathon too!

I spent the first 6 of 7 months of last year running more and more miles slower and slower, and my 5k stuck at around 25:30. It wasn't till I started going to the track that I got it down to 23:19 - and it took all of 6 weeks.

I am definitely in this bracket, and my next race is a 5k in June. PB is 22:50 and I am certain I can beat that on the day under race conditions but am going to train specifically for it. I've recently upped mileage and tempo runs in order to PB at 10m and 10k.

Current plan is to run 1 LSR a week 10-15m. 3 recovery runs / general runs 3-6m, and then 1 Interval session on 400-1500m. I may get a Tempo run as well depending on how I feel and time commitments. I am getting a lot more used to the "pain" thing and running at full speed for as long as possible which previously was my downfall.
