So this is my trainer: aldi.co.uk I grabbed it on a whim when buying bread 1 year ago. It's finally out of the box.

So you can operate with an unsupported trainer, but there may be some limitations. Zwift works by either reading or estimating power. For trainers without an in-built power meter, they estimate it by having previously done some tests on the device and creating a function linking power and speed. It's a fairly error prone process at the best of times (sensitive to tyre pressure, rider weight etc.), and more so if they haven't been able to do the tests. The bikemate isn't on the supported list. You can choose unsupported device, and still give the software a go, but the power it displays may bear little resemblance to the actual value you are producing. |

OK, I thought that's what the speed and cadence sensors were for. I'll give it a go on the free trial to see how it works out then. Thanks.

Because Zwift mimics gradient, aerodynamic drag and surface resistance, it can't directly use speed as an input (otherwise you could be climbing walls at 40kph!). So it uses speed as a proxy for power on trainers that don't explicitly output power.

The question of how does it know how hard I am pushing did cross my mind, but then I lost that thought. lol

RunningRonnie Fwiw I use just speed & cadence sensors via rollers. I'm not racing or going for records, so it is basically calibrated against myself and what will be will be. It still works & gives a reasonably good workout. Reminds me I need to get back on for winter miles. |

Thanks rhb, I think that's what I am looking to get out of it.

I generally really like Zwift and I’m pleased I’ve got it, but I’m not loving the new Makuri Islands expansion. It feels very ‘gamey’ to me. I can’t see me picking those new routes that often out of choice. Anyone else tried them out yet?
