Great advice from RooA, a lot of people think neutering will solve behavioural problems but that's not a reason to do it.
That said, you could consider the chemical implant? should give you an idea how he'll react to neutering. friends of ours had good success with that.

Agree - I have a 2 year old border collie and he isn't showing any signs of aggression, marking or humping. He is like scooby doo though and will jump into my lap if a noise scares him!
I'm leaving the neutering for now as I really don't want him to get more scooby doo!

Thanks for the replies. The chemical option sounds like something to investigate. We weren’t going to do anything before Jan at the earliest anyway but that sounds like a good option.
He doesn’t hump other dogs but did show a lot of interest in a girl dog last week (which was actually useful as he then dropped the ball he’d stolen from another dog!).
I think the issue with visitors is that we don’t get a lot so we may just have to invite people round a bit more!

Give him a safe space and something to do when visitors come (e.g. crate with a stuffed Kong/bed with a nice long lasting chew). Maybe meet the visitors outside a litte way from the house and all walk back together. Don't force him to interact with them... actually an ideal situation is the dog ignoring visitors completely if you think about it.
It is useful to have a dog that will settle in a complete seperate space so you can have visitors and the dog can be away. There's no point including him if he's stressed and scared by it.
It'll take time but if you prioritise him feeling safe and getting something good when visitors turn up he will change his outlook.
Also, although entire dogs are likely to be a bit more intense about it, neutering doesn't necessarily entirely stop an interest in or being distracted by bitches. Especially if people are walking their in heat bitches. Testosterone is a powerful drug and growing up under it's influence lasts, even after castration.

Thanks Roo. We’ve done the meeting outside thing a couple of times and it has worked relatively well. We’ll do some more work getting to settle into his bed.

Cookie has just pissed on my slipper. Whilst I was wearing it. Firework anxiety. Although we can’t hear them he knows they’re about and hates even going into the garden when it’s dark at this time of year. He didn’t show any signs of needing to go out. After his tinkle on me I took him outside and he did a bit more. He’s now sat on the sofa demolishing an antler with what’s left of his teeth.

From my blog today - Jet was in pain. The pharmacist tried to refuse to sell me the Calpol after I said it was for the dog. "I can't sell you this for a dog". "The vet told me to buy Calpol for the dog. You are not prescribing it for a dog. You are selling it to me. It is up to me what I do with it. I am deciding to follow the advice of the appropriately qualified professional who says it is the correct medicine." A man in the shop was waiting for his prescription and said, "I've never heard anything like it." "You have now". Jet is relaxed and happy tonight - the Calpol seems to be working.

I had a similar issue with getting Benylin to treat kennel cough, Helegant. I ended up saying it was for me.
