57.5 Degrees of Pain
We are lucky that Belle isn't particularly bothered by fireworks. Unlike our previous dogs. And our village is pretty quiet other than New Year.

She turns 11 in Feb and I don't let her try and jump into my car any more, she still thinks it's easy so makes no effort at a run up, but she can't make it from a standing start. She still runs well but I keep her on a similar schedule to an aging runner with rest days and a controlled training mileage.

57.5 Degrees of Pain
Our friends' Staffie cross just turned 18. Cue amusing pictures of a dignified old lady with beer bottles surrounding her in her bed. I suspect she'd still chase anything that moved.

A few distant fireworks round here tonight too. Fortunately Monty didn’t seem to notice. To be fair he was more wound up by me watching the rugby!

57.5 Degrees of Pain
A WWI trench barrage could break out across the road and Belle wouldn't notice if her favourite rugby is on TV.

We're very fortunate that Bella doesn't seem to be bothered by fireworks (or indeed cannons), but I'm sure it's miserable for those who are bothered by them (canine and human).

We had a big display for end of year at the big private school near here last year and there was uproar because it was so loud and lots of people had just taken in Ukrainian refugees who were scared witless. They tried to claim they'd warned us and that they did it every year, but they'd only warned a small number of households. When I can hear it (fairly deaf) inside my house from over a mile away it's probably too loud.

I’ve discovered today that the dog warden in Barnsley is called Adam Nippers and it has made me giggle all afternoon.

Anyone have any advice on neutering young male dogs?

Monty is now 15 months old and is getting quite territorial at home if we get visitors. He calms down eventually but barks quite aggressively at the start.

Territorial? Or anxious?

Neutering won't help with anxiety and can make anxiety based behaviour worse.

Personally I'd see what I could do with training in the first instance. Neuter if you want to neuter but I wouldn't expect it to be a fix for that issue, so you'll probably need to do the training anyway.

The only behavioural issues I'd expect to be eased by neutering would be things like straying and roaming, possibly aggression towards other male dogs and "bitching" (getting really distracted and zoned out when they smell an entire bitch nearby or her pee).

Even humping is often more anxiety based than sex-drive based.

There are obviously other reasons to neuter but just be very wary of thinking it will fix behaviour issues. It might. It might not.
