Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Well done Mabel!

My dogs have 'found' three missing dogs over the years on runs. But only because I was alerted to be on the lookout and the missing individuals came out to play/run with us.

Biscuit was attacked by another dog on our walk today.

Horrible incident, physically he's fine butvI don't know what the after effects will be :(

Oh no, Carp!
Big hugs for you and Biscuit. Hopefully you'll both be ok and not too traumatized in the long run.

Is it a dog that lives locally or that you've seen before?

No, just a random encounter. The owner was horrified - as any of us would be if it were our dog.

Oh my goodness Carp that's awful. Hopefully he won't be traumatised by it but I know he's a nervous soul sometimes. I know the experts sometimes say don't walk them for a couple of days after something like that happens to let them settle/recover but I guess you're best placed to work out whether rest or normal routine is what he'll want.

I feel for you Carp. I read your blog about it and it sound frightening for all concerned, especially as the reasons are unknown. It's good that there were no physical injuries and I hope Biscuit isn't too traumatised. Do you still feel shaken?

Not that it helps you now but when this sort of thing happens I always wonder about the body language and circumstances that we don't 'read', what triggered the encounter and what the two dogs made of it?

As an example, in different circumstances, Jet was attacked (scared but unhurt) as an adolescent dog and I was horrified. Later on I understood that the older female was enforcing dog 'manners' in a way that I found frightening but is apparently 'normal'. I learned that 'dogs speak dog better than humans speak dog'.

Jet is over 11 years old now, and he enforces manners with junior dogs, usually with a quiet "that's enough" growl if they become over-enthusiatic. He is always on a lead and I warn owners before we get to that point if their puppy looks a bit too full-on, "they can say hello, but be aware this is an old dog and he can get grumpy if he's bounced". Jet has never attacked another dog though but he has increased the growl to a full-on "geroff now!" with a local boxer (the owner asked me to let him 'tell her' and it worked; he is now respectful of other dogs).

As an old dog, ageing fast, Jet is not just going grey; he is now losing his sight and hearing, his joints are stiffening up and he's getting a bit senile. His patience is shorter too, especially at meal times and he wails while his food is being prepared (a new development). The mad morning 'zoomies' are limited to around a minute in the garden when he first wakes up. His idea of a good walk has changed from multi-mile racing around the fields to a sedate on-lead 'sniffari', never too far from home, and followed a long sleep.

On the plus side I noticed this morning that Jet's nose still works very well, and we still can't leave anything smelly within reach. This morning he stole my slipper and offered to fight me for it. :-)
