One of the tips I’ve read for barking is rewarding the silence. So once the dog is quiet count to three and if there’s no barking, reward the silence. We did this with Boots when he was whining a lot in the mornings, he only got what he wanted - to come upstairs - when he had been quiet for a bit of time.

You can also teach 'silence' or 'Quiet!' - best with a hand signal.

We like Jess barking when there's someone at the door! We say 'Thank you Jess, good girl,' and she then shuts up.

But puppies will bark and it's even more inevitable that puppies will bite. They do stop!

We have started with YouTube videos of dogs barking. Probably not the best time to do it as we are both suffering with really bad headaches. Might wait until we come through illness first.

Rewarding calm is definitely valuable more generally. Ernie barks a lot in the house. He barks when people pass by, when he hears other dogs at the beach (end of road), if someone rings the door bell. He yells at me to get my attention especially if I’m talking to QP. Although that sounds a lot it really doesn’t bother me too much apart from the demanding stuff.

We get a lot of barking at night - usually protest at being shut in the kitchen. We say 'Shush' and then praise if she remains quiet. Obviously we can't reward because any move to open the kitchen door and the brindle bullet would be out and up the stairs before we've barely pushed the handle!

Frankie seems to be barking more at sounds and movement: people walking by outside, neighbour loading his work van in the morning etc. Given I'm working from home in the same room as him it is a little wearing, but not too bad. Only problem is I run a team meeting 9am Monday morning by skype, and that of course is prime time for parents walking to and from the local primary school. I think the rest of the team are getting used to the interruptions!

Rory barks if there's a cat outside. (By 'barks' I really mean 'barks and yowels and whines and scratches at the window and scrabbles at the back door and ricochets between the front window and the kitchen door and the bedroom window upstairs, scattering water bowls and door mats in his wake.')

It's extraordinarily annoying and has proved resistant to distraction with treats, teaching 'settle', crate training, removal to the kitchen as soon as he starts doing it (that was a mistake, he was so annoyed he peed on the dishwasher), ignoring, white noise, closed curtains, blinds, covering the windows with cardboard and putting him on the lead and taking him outside to see the offending cat.

The ONLY things that work are Bonfire night (because he's scared of fireworks) and me eating something incredibly exciting (ice cream usually does it).

Wanda is much the same if a cat is stupid enough to come into our garden. There's one that walks along the top of the fence taunting her and just as she is about to launch herself into the air at it it steps neatly onto the roof of next door's shed. There is nothing I could do that would distract her - I imagine if I took an entire roast chicken out of the oven and dropped it on the floor at the same time as a cat walked past the french windows she probably wouldn't even notice the chicken.

George is the same, Baroness. He will come back to me after he's seen a squirrel or a rabbit but if sees a cat ...... They wind him up around our back garden too, and sit on the conservatory roof when he's in the house - he is incandescent with rage when that happens.
